Motor Learning Theory for Pilates
What Is Motor Learning and Control?
Motor Learning and Control is a Bio-Behavioral Science that focuses on the complex processes in the brain and the central nervous system that allow for production of a new motor skill as a result of systematic learning and practice. Experts use theories of Motor Learning to better teach their students new skills and to refine these skills more easily.
Why Does This Matter for Pilates?
There is very little information on Pilates skill development and how to help clients progress faster based on deeper mind-body awareness. In certification programs teachers learn to cue specific movements, but not necessarily how to connect those movements to a deeper understanding of what the brain needs to do to initiate those patterns and retain that information. Often when clients struggle or plateau in the practice it’s due to a Motor Learning or Motor Control dysfunction that requires adapting teaching cues and corrections to simplify an exercise so that the correct pattern can be imprinted on the brain. Adapting teaching cues to the body in front of you is easier when you understand how Motor Learning and Control work.
This is why at Kinexology all of our teachers have taken our Kinexology Method Courses that focus how to implement Motor Learning and Control concepts into their teaching and clients’ programs. This ensures that clients will get the most out of their workouts and see real change and progress in their bodies.
