The Virtual Reality
This has been a scary time as a studio owner. Many colleagues have had to temporarily close their studios because of mandated quarantines or general concerns about coronavirus. And from the conversations I’m part of, it seems that studios of all sizes are experiencing some difficulty transitioning to virtual sessions. I too was concerned about switching to virtual teaching, and a bunch of questions about how it would work swirled around in my head. What if my clients didn’t like it? How would they adapt to practicing at home? Should I offer them a discount?
The more I thought about this, the more I realized that this virtual challenge was an opportunity for both my clients and myself. I realized I would be forced to teach differently than I normally do, and that in the end it would only strengthen me as a teacher. Having now completed six virtual sessions, I can see that my clients are forced into a situation where they need to be extremely present, listening closely, and participating fully by thinking deeply about each exercise. It is honestly amazing.
So far all clients have said that they had an extremely good workout, and that they were able to escape from our current worldly situation. And I have had the opportunity to be more creative with their routines which has helped me get out of a teaching rut! And as far as pricing is concerned, I’m charging the exact same fees as when we meet in person because I know I’m delivering the same (or more) value. You can too.
I am not saying that I am going to transition my whole studio to virtual teaching forever because I miss being with my clients in real life, but I am learning so much from this experience. I’m compiling tips into a new webinar workshop called Virtual Virtuoso as a way of helping our community. I know that if we rise to the challenge of keeping our students engaged and progressing via video sessions, it will better us all in the long run as Pilates teachers. Let’s do this!
