<image:caption>Pilates Training & Certification: Real Pilates Comprehensive Certification Years Teaching Pilates: 4 Other Training & Coursework: I’ve been a dancer for 26 years and have been teaching dance for nine years. What Motivated You to Become a Pilates Instructor? I was always under the impression that I was a relatively “in shape” and healthy fit person. I had some back and hip issues that I thought were just a normal part of being a dancer, but it wasn’t until I started doing Pilates regularly that my pain completely went away. I thought if Pilates could help me so much, I was certain it would help others as well. I was inspired by the fact that it could help anyone, regardless of movement background. How has Pilates Helped You? Pilates has personally helped me become a stronger dancer and has reigned in my hypermobility, ensuring that I am able to find my center by strengthening my core. It has also helped me become a better dance teacher by giving me language to talk about movement. Favorite Pilates Exercise: It’s probably a tie between Candlestick on the Cadillac because I love being upside down and it's always a challenge for me, and Short Spine because it just feels so good for me. Proudest Pilates Teaching Moment: I worked with a client who was an avid marathon runner and injured his knee during training. I met him after surgery and physical therapy. This client was very dedicated to his practice and worked hard in his sessions and we got him back to running. I really enjoy helping people do what brings them joy, whether that’s another form of fitness or simply not being in pain at the end of the day. Who Is Your Ideal Client? I enjoy working with clients from all backgrounds and movement abilities. I’ve worked with dancers, younger clients who are professional athletes coming back from injuries, older clients with osteoporosis who just want to feel good at the end of the day, and pretty much everyone in between. I really like working with clients who are excited about what Pilates can do for them. What Attracted You to Kinexology? I am always interested in learning more about my line of work. I’m excited to have a group of instructors who have come from different backgrounds and have different approaches to the method to consult with. How Do You Use Motor Learning and the Kinexology Method in Your Sessions? I am proud to say that I was the first graduate of the Kinexology Method course What You Say Matters back in 2019. That course helped me to understand that while I was cuing clients through an exercise, they weren’t retaining the information I was giving them. Really honing in on what I say to clients and when I say it has helped me actually teach as opposed to simply instruct. What Can Clients Expect From Working With You? I strive to give clients a good workout, and hope that they walk out of the session feeling better than when they came in.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Pilates Certification: Pilates Technique Certification Other Training & Coursework: NASM certified AED & CPR certified FRC Specialist FMS facilitator 3-day anatomy workshop at Bastyr University Previous professional dancer Pranayama breath work certified with Jon Paul Crimini Years Teaching Pilates: 15 What Motivated You to Become a Pilates Instructor? I fell on the bolt of a roller skate when I was nine and cracked my tailbone. The injury gave me scoliosis, and the scoliosis gave me a lot of pain; I was throwing my back out multiple times a year throughout my childhood. These two things, combined with the high demands of my dance career, led me to seek out a method of exercise that would help me remain pain free and feel in control of caring for my body. I wanted to be empowered despite my injuries, not a victim to them. How has Pilates Helped You? Pilates gave me body awareness. This awareness extended beyond my body and into myself increasing my confidence to truly thrive in my life. The improved posture, balanced musculature, and pure strength that I gained has had an empowering effect that has seeped into every aspect of my life. Favorite Pilates Exercise: Swan, hands down! Proudest Pilates Teaching Moment: When Christine first came to me she had a bead of sweat above her upper lip from the intense levels of pain that she endured on a daily basis. Her posture was quite rounded, and she walked slowly, as to ensure that she didn’t make any sudden move that would throw her back into spasm. The pain had exhausted her spirit, and because of this, she wasn’t all that pleasant to be around. We began working together consistently two times a week. It was dicey at first because she didn’t understand the transformative power of Pilates, nor did she fully trust me. It was understandable after trying for years to find relief by trying new therapists and methods. She was skeptical. Fast forward six months, and she’s walking taller, fifteen pounds lighter, and always smiling. It brought me such joy when that summer she cancelled her sessions because she had planned a trip to Europe. Our work together gave her complete confidence that she could handle the long hours of travel, carrying luggage, and being on her feet in another country. She told me that Pilates gave her back her hope and then it gave her back her life. We still work together today. What Attracted You to Kinexology? I was attracted to Chelsea’s critical thinking skills. She pushed back against our industry’s status quo, providing teachers with actionable tools that are backed by science and actually work. I noticed right away that frustration levels were down and fun and learning was up! (for both student and teacher alike). Who Is Your Ideal Client? I love working with growth-minded people who are ready to challenge the status quo--people who show up fully present and open minded, ready to learn more about themselves through their body work practice. Many of my clients are adventurous, independent women motivated by challenge and accomplishment, and most are struggling with an old ache that won’t go away, or a troublesome injury. They know they are not living to their full potential but they want to. How Do You Use Motor Learning and the Kinexology Method in Your Sessions? I speak less and focus on the one correction that may be harder to correc,t but which will make the greatest impact. By saying less, my students are more apt to listen and stop the workout so we can really troubleshoot the particular correction. I have themes or skill sets that I know I’m working on. This still allows me the freedom to move around the studio to find the apparatus where this will make most sense to the student; but it keeps the hour loose enough that I can answer any specific questions that they would like to address. I have a plan of how to actually move the client forward towards their goals. And I trust that the plan I’m creating is going to work, because I’m addressing skill sets, not exercises. What Can Clients Expect From Working With You? Empowerment. Transformation that starts in the body and extends to relationships, thereby improving quality of life. Real tools to manage pain and injuries when they’re away from the studio.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Other Training & Coursework: Trauma Informed Pilates Approach, Triggerpoint Foam Rolling, Barre, TRX, E-RYT 200 Yoga Teacher Years Teaching Pilates: 3 What Motivated You to Become a Pilates Instructor? Pilates gave me a really precise language to talk about movement. I was completely humbled by my first Pilates class, and I knew I had to learn more about it and share this amazing movement journey with others. How Has Pilates helped You? Pilates opened up a new conversation with my body and its abilities. It has sharpened my body awareness and brought an element of play into my personal movement practice. Favorite Pilates Exercise: I love Saw! It’s a juicy combination of spinal flexion and rotation, plus a little flair at the wrists--sign me up! Fun Fact: In addition to teaching Pilates, I’m also the host of Pilates Teachers’ Manual podcast and Pilates Students’ Manual podcast. Proudest Pilates Teaching Moment: I love every single light-bulb moment my clients have, but one of my favorites happened with a client who was working for months on the Roll Up. We worked every piece together, focused on the key elements of it, but it just wasn’t happening. Working virtually during 2020, we were just having a regular session when I cued her to roll up, and she did so with total ease. We just stared at each other for a moment, surprised and speechless, and then we shared the biggest smile because we both knew how long and hard she had been working on that exercise. It’s such an awesome moment when those connections happen. Who Is Your Ideal Client? Clients who are curious about movement, and how their bodies work, are some of my favorite clients to work with. I enjoy working with clients who are interested in sharing their Pilates adventure, having a conversation about what they’re feeling and what I’m seeing, and are willing to try new things to progress toward their goals. What Attracted You to Kinexology? Kinexology’s blending of Motor Learning Theory and connection is such a powerful combination. I believe that Kinexology is elevating the profession of teaching Pilates, and I wanted to be a part of such an awesome group of teachers. How Do You Use Motor Learning and the Kinexology Method in Your Sessions? The Kinexology Method has given me a framework to approach Pilates that is clear, concise, and easy to communicate. As a result of studying Motor Learning Theory, I am able to give clients more targeted feedback that helps them grow and supports them in and out of sessions. What Can Clients Expect From Working With You? Clients can expect a positive, supportive environment where they can move and grow at their own pace. Sessions are collaborative, and our dialogue is what makes every session tailor made for each client. Together we’ll be movers, scientists, detectives, explorers, and celebrate all the victories along the way.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Pilates Certification: Romana’s Pilates Certification Other Training & Coursework: MS, Biobehavioral Science: Motor Learning and Control from Teachers College, Columbia University. Years Teaching Pilates: 10 What Motivated You to Become a Pilates Instructor? I was introduced to Pilates at the very young age of 13. I was always “good” at it and seemed to have a knack for not only doing Pilates, but also for understanding the system on a deeper level. I was highly encouraged by my teacher to become certified while in college. The true motivation for becoming a teacher arose when I sustained a significant hip injury while I was still becoming certified. The doctors said I had a 50/ 50 shot of needing surgery, but I used the system and was able to avoid the surgery. This sparked a desire to use the system of Pilates to help people feel better and move better. How has Pilates Helped You? Pilates has helped me in so many ways. Physically, it has helped me learn the limits of my body and how to move smartly in everyday life. Pilates has given me strength and awareness, and I always know that I have a system to fall back on. Mentally, Pilates have given me a gift. I love the puzzle of each body I teach, and how I can adapt the method and utilize it in a way that is unique for each person. This mental aspect to Pilates is probably what I love the most about it! Proudest Pilates Teaching Moment: I was teaching a client who had a very complicated situation. She had her legs essentially reconstructed three times. It was her goal to be able to pick up her children without her back hurting and to be able to get on and off the floor. These are some rudimentary things that people do in their everyday lives and take it for granted. After months of training she was seeing progress and after a year she was able to successfully get up and down off of the floor and pick her children up with no pain. We both cried and hugged each other because as a team we did it. I will never forget the pride and joy I had in that moment for her. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing your student achieve something amazing. What Types of Client/Pilates Challenges Get You Most Excited? I love clients that have a goal. I enjoy a good puzzle and trying to figure out how to get someone to achieve that goal by breaking it down iinto manageable skills and pieces. I am not the teacher that cares about the aesthetics that Pilates can enhance, but more about the why and how Pilates can help you feel better, move better, and live better. Why Did You Create Kinexology? I felt that there was an opportunity to fill a void in the Pilates industry for both teachers and students. Too often students experience judgement about their bodies, their mobility, or how they should participate in their sessions. It’s not uncommon for teachers to instruct in a rigid manner with an emphasis on choreography vs. true learning. I wanted to create a space where both students and teachers can feel safe and where they can grow and learn from one another without judgement. I wanted to break down the rigidity of the “system,” and use science to open doors for teachers to think critically and ask questions of “why” and “how” instead of simply repeating a standard script. Incorporating science and evidence-based methods for teaching and learning will only enhance the Pilates that we all know and love. On the flip side, I wanted to create a positive community for Pilates teachers where they can learn from one another, challenge ideas, and collaborate on how to solve tough challenges. After a lot of reflection and planning, the answer came together in Kinexology where we teach Pilates, but also train teachers how to teach more effectively. One person can’t know it all, so why not surround yourself with others who can teach you more! Who Is Your Ideal Client? A beginner client! I love teaching beginners because I get to help them establish a strong foundation and work on big goals, but I also work with a lot of Pilates teachers who want a different approach from that they themselves learned, or who have injuries of movement dysfunctions. Favorite Pilates Exercise: I love Swan! How Do You Use Motor Learning and the Kinexology Method in Your Sessions? I utilize motor learning concepts into every program. I am able to adjust my feedback to the learner to optimize learning and retention of skills. What Can Clients Expect From Working With You? Clients can expect a warm, supportive learning environment. I make sure to match the program and the feedback to the level of the learner. Your program will grow as you improve and retain more skills. I believe each session is a team-based effort. So I expect you to not only put in the physical work, but also the mental work during your session. This is how together we can help you achieve your goals!</image:caption>
